Indian Mahindra Looking to Buy Norton and BSA

Motorcycle NewsIndia's motorcycle market is one of the biggest in the world and many of the companies active there are equally as massive. One company that wants to get a foothold is automotive manufacturing giant Mahindra, and industry sources tell us it's looking at getting its hands on a British brand to boost under its chances.

Marketing machines under its own name, Mahindra has been trying to get a slice of the Indian motorcycle market for a while but has struggled to make significant progress. Last year it bought a controlling 51 percent share in the French Peugeot Motorcycles, giving it access to more technology and an established name, and now it's rumored to be in talks with another well-known motorcycle manufacturer.

Norton and BSA have both been mentioned as targets in the Indian press but of the two, Norton is more likely. Under Stuart Gamer's guidance, ownership of the brand and the worldwide rights to the name have been consolidated after years of dispute and confusion, and there's a range of high profile, if low volume, motorcycles already bearing the name. BSA offers less appeal with its lack of recent activity to keep the name in public eye.

Chinese Motorcycle Business Future

Motorcycle NewsEuro 4 exhaust emission regulations have been increasingly complex engine management teasing the best performance from ever 'greener' engines. So far it's been a success, with the big European and Japanese brands finding clever ways to get greater power and economy; it's been a benefit to the vast majority of us, the motorcycle-buying public. And this tighter regulation could also have a positive effect on the Chinese motorcycle market.

We spoke with some motorcycle industry market experts. They say: “The Chinese manufacturers that want to continue to export to Europe will need to create Euro 4 compliant motorcycles. They'll probably use the same tried-and-tested Electronic Fuel Injection systems already in existence from companies like Bosch (German) and Delphi (USA), who have been doing this for a number of years. There are currently no native Chinese manufacturers of EFI systems as far as we know, but they will eventually do it themselves.”

Several Chinese manufacturers have been building a strong brand and dealer network, offering Chinese-made motorcycles from a Thai base with variety of tweaks carried out in local assembly factories.

The Yamaha 04GEN Concept Scooter

Motorcycle NewsYamaha has revealed another one of its scooter concept, hinting at what the future on two wheels might look like. The Yamaha 04GEN scooter designed concept model was exhibited at the Vietnam Motorcycle Show 2016 in April in Ho Chi Minh City, the first motorcycle show event held in Vietnam.

The Yamaha 04GEN design is based on the RUN-WAY concept, which according to Yamaha symbolizes an air of dignified elegance and grace in both mind and body.

Compared to most scooter bodywork structures (which hide the frame with exterior parts) the Yamaha 04GEN only covers the frame with semi-transparent exterior parts, Yamaha reckons that showcasing the beautifully-engineered interior structure brings lightness to its majestic body, creating a new design which synthesizes the interior and exterior to achieve a rare beauty.

The Triumph Street Twin Made in Thailand

Motorcycle NewsAs you may already know, Triumph's Street Twin isn't made in the UK. It's built in Chonburi, Thailand. You may also already know that Triumph has more factories abroad than it's ever had in the UK – but should you be worried about the quality of the motorcycles that come from these factories?

People can be very sniffy about motorcycles not made in the country a particular brand is associated with. It's the same with all large American and European brands. There's often a suspicion that manufacturing technology and workmanship is going to become sub-standard as soon as production goes abroad. In the Triumph Street Twin's case, this couldn't be further from the truth.

The quality of the finish on the Triumph Street Twin is exceptionally high – equal to, or better than many pricier Japanese or European-built machines. The paint finish is excellent, not just on the fuel tank and side panels but also on the frame and swingarm. The crinkle finish on the engine is well matched to the plastic sprocket cover and the brushed effect on the stainless exhaust and dummy carburetor covers gives the motorcycle a classy, contemporary look.

The Yamaha Tracer 700 - Sport-Touring MT-07 Version

Motorcycle NewsIn Europe, Yamaha has officially unveiled a sport-touring version of the Yamaha MT-07, known as the Yamaha Tracer 700.

This promises to be one of the most affordable of the genre, if it arrives here which is not yet confirmed, but we'd be surprised if it was overlooked. Based on the Yamaha MT-07 chassis and using the high output 56kW (75 horsepower) 689cc parallel-twin engine, the Yamaha Tracer 700 adds a 50mm longer swingarm (wheelbased 1450mm) a 3 liters larger fuel tank (17 liter), and suspension revisions for a 'smooth and responsive character'.

There's also a manually adjustable screen (with a taller option available), a stepped dual seat with grab rail, hand guards with indicators incorporated and luggage options. The latter comprise 20 liters soft panniers and 39 liters top box. It even gets the dual headlights of its bigger brother. At 196 kilograms wet, the Yamaha Tracer 700 is a real lightweight of the genre, which is a good thing for less experienced riders and also those who are looking to maximize performance and economy.
