The Vee Rubber VRM-206 Dual-Sport / Adventure Tires

Motorcycle PartsThe Vee Rubber VRM-206 Adventure Bike Tires, probably the most important thing for a Adventure bike is the tire choice, which seems to be a hot topic in the adventure community. With a vast range of requirements,. It's impossible for any one type of tire to address the full range of needs for both on-road and off-road. That said, the ideal tire would perform great off-road and be made from a compound that's not too soft to wear off in nothing flat on either pavement or rocks.

I waited as long as I could to replace the tires on my adventure bike, after I started looking to replace the current tires I discovered the Vee Rubber VRM-206 tires. I wasn't sure if they would measure up on off-road terrain with a full load. Even with the heavy-duty sidewall construction, I was able to spoon them on myself with the aid of some tools.

The destination of choice to give them a first test was a combination of unpaved country roads, muddy roads, and some semi-dry soft sand roads in Khon Kaen Province...

New Ducati Testastretta DVT Engine with Variable Valve Timing

Motorcycle PartsDucati as announced a new Testastretta DVT engine, which utilizes variable valve timing on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. The system continuously adjusts intake and exhaust valve timing independently of each other, optimizing engine power through the rev range while at the same time improving fuel efficiency.

Ducati claims that the new Testastretta DVT engine is the first variable valve timing for motorcycles that operates both camshafts; while the press material does not mention a specific motorcycle that the new Testastretta DVT engine will be fitted in, the Ducati Multistrada 1200 is likely the prime candidate. The bore and stroke measurements are identical to the Ducati Multistrada 1200's at 106 x 67.9mm.

High-Visibility for Your Safety

Motorcycle PartsMost motorcycle garments have at least reflective piping, or thin strips of reflective material along seams. These light up and shine very brightly when light falls on them. The thing about reflection is to remember that most will shine in the direction the light is falling on them. So they must be positioned where a car/truck driver or other road user can see them, else they will not be as bright as you think. Similarly, keep an eye out for where the reflectives are.

I have a motorcycle jacket that has a reflective logo right at the base of the back where my trouser belt usually goes. On most sportsbikes, this logo is not visible at all and hence is useless. If the motorcycle jacket doesn't have reflective patches, you can do something about it.

Buy a Motorcycle Jacket - How To

Motorcycle PartsMotorcycle jackets are a critical part of your riding gear. Boots are usually even more expensive, but most people buy the jacket right after they have purchased their helmet and gloves. We made a few points on how you buy a motorcycle jacket that will look good, be comfortable enough to use all the time and protect your skin when you unlucky enough to meet the tarmac...

Safety is the primary reason to wear a motorcycle jacket. It is meant to keep the blood and flesh inside the skin more than it is meant to protect you from the heat, cold or rain. So ideally, you want as much protection as possible. Think Iron Man. But the more bulky a jacket gets, the harder it becomes to live with because at some point you're going to have to take it off and cart it around or try to shove it into a bag.

So at it like this. Ninety nine percent of you are not going to use the jacket at outrageous speeds because you're riding on the street or the highway and not the racetrack. So you need a blend of reasonable protection and portability, in that order.

MotoGlo Safety Helmet Lights

Motorcycle PartsThe silly excuse – Sorry I Didn't See You – is often trotted out by motorists who hit motorcyclists, but what they really mean is – Sorry I Wasn't Looking Out For Your. Car drivers often seem to scan only for other tin tops, and therefore may not always notice those motorcycles on the road.

Moreover, stop lights on motorcycles are often mounted lower than on cars and may be overlooked by following traffic. So motorcyclists need all the help they can get.

And that's where the MotoGlo Helmet Safety Light by Whistler can help. The device consists of a series of LED lights attached to a semicircular band that adheres to most any type of motorcycle helmet. The red running lights of the MotoGlo device act like a high-stop light on a car, making the motorcyclist more visible.

The Right Torque for Fasteners is not Only for Engines

Motorcycle PartsEvery fastener on your motorcycle has a recommended torque; you'll find the values for specific ones in the service manual, but you can spitball it based on the fastener's diameter. Use too little torque and the fastener can back out; too much, and it can break off or strip the threads in the hole.

Either way, you'll have to dust off that tap-and-die set. Good torque wrenches aren't cheap, but they pay for themselves quickly.

Torque wrenches range from the inexpensive beam-type to the pricier click-type and digital models probably top the price range. Beam-style torque wrenches are wonderfully rugged but are subject to viewing errors; click-types are as easy as it gets.

Buy one calibrated in both foot-pounds and Newton-meters. Make sure the torque range fits the jobs you need to do. 10 to 85 Newton-meters ought to cover most common tasks. Beware that torque wrenches are most accurate in the middle of their range, so choose a tool accordingly.

Keep your Footrests in Good Condition

Motorcycle PartsWorn footrest rubbers can transmit vibrations to your feet and can allow your boots to slip off the foot peg. If you're lucky the rubbers may be screw attached but on older motorcycles they're normally an interference fit. Remove the rubber either by twisting or cutting if it's firmly attached.

Clean the metal where the rubber was attached then fit the new rubber but never use grease or soap as it'll allow the rubber to move when you need it to stay in place. Instead squirt some carburetor cleaner down the mounting hole and drive the rubber in place.

The YSS G-Series Monoshock

Motorcycle PartsSome maybe ask why replace my original rear shock with a YSS G-Series replacement. The thing is, if you're loading up your motorcycle with the extra weight of all that luggage and perhaps a girlfriend as a pillion might fall outside the original intended use for your sporty motorcycle..

Most original equipment suspension comes with an adjustment range fir for what the motorcycle is aimed at, so if you're going touring, or ride lots of time two-up, the YSS G-Series Monoshock should broaded your setup spectrum to cope with the extra weight.

The Basics of Braking

Motorcycle PartsSo you got a fast motorcycle? Try riding fast assuming your brakes don't work. You'll find it impossible. As much as brakes are there to control speed and stop your motorcycle, their effectiveness is required to ensure you can actually use all that performance in the first place.

The one common phenomenon that connects steering, acceleration and braking is friction. The braking system essentially causes deceleration by converting kinetic energy into heat using friction. It usually has three parts. The first is the actuator which is the human interface – usually in the form of a lever or a pedal.

Then comes the force multiplier. This is important because the amount of force needed to stop even a lightweight motorcycle is immense. Even the fittest, strongest person will find it hard to press a lever hard enough to produce reasonably good deceleration. The force multiplier takes the form of mechanical or hydraulic systems.
