Hi guys.

What's the story with Triumph in Thailand?

e.g. Are they made in India and brought into Thailand then assembled here?

If so, I assume they have a 60% tariff added?

I ask because the Thai prices seem to be extraordinarily high, indicating that there's a massive dealer mark-up
(as with a couple of other marques).

The truth is that officially Triumph makes no motorcycles in Thailand, the production facility in Chonburi is a bonded warehouse manufacturing facility... What basically means that they some models are made in Thailand but still outside the Thai border, so even a motorcycle made in Chonburi needs to be imported.

The mega Triumph factory in India is not operational yet... even when they start production they will start with a new 250/350cc model.

Wow, thanks for that.
So they receive that 60% tariff as per Harley Davidson?

The regular import tax tariff for countries that doesn't have any particular trade agreement with Thailand is 80 percent.

If a manufacturer is making motorcycles in Thailand using bonded warehouse manufacturing, they need can negotiate a special import tax tariff (similar to what Kawasaki has done). The deal often includes that a manufacturer employs an X amount of people, and exports an X amount of motorcycles to be able to import an X amount of motorcycles with special low import tax.

At the moment Triumph has not made any attempts to negotiate for special import tax tariffs. Also with the uncertainty of what Triumph wants to do with its Thai factory we do not expect them to start negotiate with the Thai Board of Investors (BOI) anytime soon.

Triumph motorcycles which will be manufactured in India would very likely qualify for the 60 percent import tax tariff. But, as the production of the new factory is not yet started we do not know if Triumph will make them in India, or will use bonded warehouse manufacturing...

If anybody knows anything more.... please jump in and tell..... Ride On
