Triumph 250cc Motorcycle Development on Hold

British motorcycle press have quotes Triumph sales and marketing director Paul Struad as confirming that the 250cc platform project 'has been on hold'. Two motorcycles, one streetbike and one sportsbike had been caught testing earlier and Triumph had also showed sketches at a motorcycle show for this project. The motorcycles were expected to be produced in India for distribution around the world.

Triumph India has neither confirmed nor denied that the 250cc development project has stopped. They wanted to contact Triumph headoffice first for an official response.
We believe the issue is that all the motorcycles in the segment are now using or aiming for higher displacements for a performance advantage and the 250c Triumph was in real danger of being outgunned at launch. As such, the project has been shelved in favor of a plan to create a new platform that brings a 300cc or slightly larger motorcycle with the possibility of expansing the displacement upwards for future-proofing.

The original Triumph 250cc plan was expected to spawn first a sportsbike and then a retro-naked motorcycle. We believe the new 300cc single will follow that same path and take on the likes of the Honda CBR300R and the Ninja 300.
