A few years back, motorcycles had limited power and speed, a spot of fast road riding was all you needed to get your fill of the superbike experience. You could happily wring all the power out of your chosen motorcycle with almost reckless abandon, safe in the knowledge that only a roadblock could ruin your day. Plus, riding a bendy chassis wearing tires that you wouldn't even put on your lawnmower today, finding the limits of your motorcycle's handling was hardly a tricky affair either.Things are very different in 2010. For a start, you can't be certain that there isn't a speed radar pointed at you for parts of your journey, yes some police departments have handheld speed detection equipment. We even have seen some static speed cameras on the outer-ring road of Bangkok.
On top of that, with motorcycles like the Kawasaki ZX-10R, Yamaha YZF-R1, Ducati 1198, and other motorcycle models topping a ton in first, it would be illegal to ever experience peak power on the road, let alone wring it out through third and fourth. Plus with modern chassis and tire technology moving as fast as the motorcycle themselves, pushing them to the limits on the road is impossible if you have even the most basic sense of self-preservation.
Why is it then, that so many of Thailand's new sportbike owners have never taken their state-of-the-art tool to a track? They're the one place where you can go flat out in relative safety.
