The BMW Adaptive Headlight Technology
BMW continues to push the boundaries of motorcycle technology. Just 3-years, BMW introduced its first superbike, the S1000RR a move that distinctly disoriented the major Japanese motorcycle makers. Now, BMW has come up with Adaptive Headlight technology as option for its BMW K1600GT mega-tourer.BMW's Adaptive Headlight Technology overcomes the problem of cornering blind on a motorcycle at night, for the headlight turns according to the amount of lean angle dialed in. It's surprising that other motorcycle manufacturers haven't thought of this solution earlier, given how widespread the technology is in the car industry.
Normally, a correctly adjusted but fixed motorcycle headlight will point too low when the motorcycle is leaned over one way or the other, leaving the corner poorly illuminated. This can be a real safety issue for riders doing significant night kilometers. BMW's Adaptive Headlight system incorporates lean-angle sensors that can determine how far the motorcycle is from the vertical, and uses a moveable reflector to aim the light beam in the right direction.
As the headlight also varies its pitch. BMW can fit an HID xexon bulb without blinding oncoming motorists. We expect the competition to react swiftly to BMW's smart initiative.
