The 2016 Triumph Speed Triple - All-New Streetfighters
British motorcycle manufacturer, Triumph, has announced that its new sixth-generation Speed Triple is due later this year, and is essentially all new. One of the motorcycles that started the streetfighter craze in the early 90s, the Triumph Speed Triple is no longer the king of the performance mountain, but features a completely new engine with over 100 new parts, resulting in more torque across the rev range, and greater top end power.Only the capacity remains the same. From 4000 to 7000rpm there's said to be 7 to 9Nm more torque than before, thanks largely to a new cylinder head and pistons, along with a ride-by-wire throttle. No official figures are available but expect peak output of around 140 horsepower. Contributing to a wilder top end is a new less restrictive exhaust system.
Despite the output increases, Triumph claims a 10 percent improvement in fuel economy and the engine meets the new Euro 4 emission regulations. It is also said to be quieter in operation. A slipper-assist clutch not only prevents rear wheel lock-up when downshifting but also has lighter springs so operation requires less effort in day-to-day use. Radial brakes feature Brembo monobloc calipers.
With ride-by-wire throttle bodies come new rider modes and there are five of them; Road, Rain, Sport, Track and Individual (Rider Configurable). New too is traction control, also rider adjustable, and ABS is standard. Suspension is fully adjustable at both ends.
As with previous generations, there's not just one Triumph Speed Triple but a pair, S and R, the latter featuring Ohlins suspension front and rear. Up front all adjustments are made at the top of the forks, and at the rear the TTX36 monoshock has a hydraulic spring preload adjustor. The Triumph Speed Triple R model also features carbon fiber bits (front mudguard, tank infill panales), and special billet-finished detailing for the handlebar clamps and risers, and swingarm pivot covers. It is defined by a special paint job, with red pinstriping, and can be had in matte graphite or crystal white.
Finally, the Triumph Speed Triple has also undergone a restyle, with new oval headlamps, a Daytona 675-like tail section smaller radiator, narrower seat and new bodywork, for a look that's more athletic and aggressive.
