The BMW F650GS Dakar is the best choice, and the most comfortable when sticking to the road with just a dash of gravel.

Despite bearing the Dakar name the BMW F650GS Dakar offers a much softer approach to single-cylinder trail bikes. It’s the adventure version of the standard GS, and comes with a Dakar paintjob, taller screen and seat, spoked wheels and longer suspension.

But it;s still more at home on the road compared to some other dual-sport motorcycles. The BMW F650GS Dakar is not a motorcycle you can push hard; it quickly wallows and is heavy when tipped into bends and the gearbox is generally clunky. But, it’s a proper workhorse with smooth power delivery and a riding position that’s far more suited to touring than off-roading as you sink into its comfy seat.

The BMW F650GS Dakar will tackle gravel roads, unpaved roads and forest paths but not much more as it is much more happy on the road with light off-road abilities which suits the occasional dirt rider.
