The Polaris Slingshot - Will It Become Legal?

The Polaris Slingshot has to wait until the Thai Ministry of Transport authority categorized it With a quick look it's almost a lightweight sporty open top sports car, but it's missing one wheel. In most countries around the world the Polaris Slingshot is qualified as a motorcycle, as it only has three wheels.

The overall design of the Polaris Slingshot reminds us of the KTM X-Bow, with razor sharp lines and the semi-naked exterior. The construction employs a steel spaceframe and the body panels are made of light-weight polymers.

The Polaris Slingshot is powered by a General Motor 2.4 liter EcoTec engine, providing 173 horsepower at 6,200rpm and 225Nm torque at 4,700rpm. All this horsepower is transmitted to the rear wheel via a five-speed manual gearbox and a carbon-reinforced drive belt. The total vehicle weights about 771 kilograms which will aid handling and performance.
The Polaris Slingshot comes in two variants – a base variant and a higher spec SL variant. The Polaris Slingshot SL runs on a set of 225/45 R18 spec tires at the front while the rear gets a 255/35 R18 spec tire. With just 127mm of ground clearance, the driver and passenger sit low for a better speed experience, according to claims from Polaris.

The Polaris Slingshot also comes with a glove-box and storage area behind the seats, both lockable. The seats are water-proof and the electronic power-assisted steering comes with rake adjust. The Polaris Slingshot SL sports a media console which consist of a 4.3-inch screen, a back-up camera, Bluetooth and USB connectivity and a six-speaker output.

On the safety front, the Polaris Slingshot features roll hoops, center mounted three-point seat-belts, projector-beam headlamps and LED rear lights.

If the Polaris Slignshot will ever become legal in Thailand you likely need to have a Thai Class-5 drivers license. We will keep you informed if it will pass road safety and becomes legal in Thailand.
