BMW S600RR Dreams Ended
BMW has firmly established itself as a leader in the superbike market but the firm has hammered another nail in the coffin of the gasping 600cc supersports category by relinquishing its claim to the S600RR trademark.At the same time as it first registered its rights to the S1000RR name, in early 2008, BMW also applied for rights to the S600RR title, leading to speculation that a smaller 600cc motorcycle was also on the cards. BMW later bought up web addresses including www.S600RR.de, adding further fuel to the German-built supersport rumors.
By 2010, BMW was officially denying it intended to create an S600RR, saying the return on the development expense of such a motorcycle wouldn’t be enough to make it worthwhile. Other manufacturers appear to have reached similar conclusions, since there have been few changes to the motorcycles in the 600cc supersports class in the past five years.
Denials about future models are commonplace though, and BMW left the door open to a smaller sportbike by retaining trademark rights to the name for several years. But now the firm has finally cancelled its claims to the S600RR name, leaving it as a dead trademark, and one that other firms are therefore open to apply for it they need it.
Unfortunately, given the miserable sales for supersports class motorcycles worldwide at the moment, it seems unlikely that anyone will be rushing to snap up the S600RR name now BMW has dropped it.Tag: BMW S600RR 600cc Supersport Trademark Development Manufacturing Business
