Yamaha World Superbike Team in top form

Motorcycle RacingYamaha World Superbike Team on top form in Portimao despite bad weather. The first test of 2009 for the Yamaha World Superbike Team at the Portimao circuit in Portugal was hampered by bad weather for the duration of the three days. Despite this setback both new riders performed well, fine tuning their set ups for the upcoming test and first race of the 2009 World Superbike Championship at Phillip Island in Australia.

Young American three-time AMA Superbike star Ben Spies was consistently on the pace, and finished the test second fastest with an overall time of 1'43.484, less than two tenths of a second off fastest rider Shane Bryne. Spies team mate, Young rising British star Tom Sykes, took advantage of the test to catch up on time missed due illness at the previous test in South Africa and flew up the times, ending the test an impressive fourth, less than a tenth of a second from his team mate with a time of 1’43.546.

Kawasaki cancels American 600cc Superbike class race

Motorcycle RacingKawasaki Motors Corp., U.S.A. has gotten out of the factory racing business by abandoning the American Superbike class in favor of the AMA SportBike 600cc class, with Roger Hayden and one other rider to campaign the all-new 2009 ZX-6R on a team run out of Attack Racing.

"We will not be racing Superbikes," said Bruce Stjernstrom, Kawasaki's Director of Marketing, in a phone conversation from Kawasaki's headquarters in Irvine, California. The team, which is to be called Monster Energy Attack Kawasaki, will be "a combined effort, but we're taking our resources and their resources and making one team to compete in the AMA series."

Reed Takes Supercross Series Lead

Motorcycle RacingChad Reed has taken the lead in the AMA/ World Supercross Championship after a, incredible charge from the back to second place at Saturday's third round at Anaheim, while Rockstar Makita Suzuki team mate Ryan Dungey increased his lead in West Coast Championship with victory in the Lites class.

In the Supercross Main - held in front of 43,000 fans at Angel Stadium - Reed was knocked down to 20th place after a first-corner crash, but spent the remaining 19 laps carving his RM-Z450 through the pack, moving into second place on lap 18.

Chad Reed:

"This was a good race weekend; we made some good changes to the Rockstar Makita Suzuki RMZ450 and kind of found out where we needed to be. The first and second practices went well, and in the heat race, I realised it would be important to get a good start. In the Main Event, I got down there in the top four but came together with another rider and went down. I thought it was going to be a real tough race - maybe I'd get a top five or something - so to get up on the podium, second especially, is awesome."

One-two on 2009 Dakar podium and eight of top ten on KTM machines

Motorcycle RacingAfter more than 9000 km through the often challenging and always spectacular scenery of Argentina and Chile, KTM factory rider Marc Coma crossed the line as the outstanding winner to claim the prize as the first winner of a Dakar held in South America. With the Dakar 2009, KTM, the company that is always "Ready to Race" not only celebrated the top two podium positions; eight of the top 10 riders were onboard KTM machines, underlining dominance of the sports machines "Made in Austria".

Coma dominates

The figure of Coma, the tall Spaniard hunched over his machine and way out in front became the most lingering visual memory of what competitors agreed was probably the most difficult Dakar in the long history of the world's toughest rally. After more than 52 hours on the bike Coma came home 1h25'38 ahead of fellow KTM factory rider Frenchman Cyril Despres. Coma's victory was not only deserved but also served to blur the memories of losing the last Dakar in 2007 through injury in the very final stages and the last minute cancellation of the 2008 Dakar in Africa because of security concerns. Coma thus reclaims the number one plate from Despres to register his second Dakar title and described his feelings saying "happiness doesn't even come close".

Marco Melandri out of Motogp

Motorcycle RacingWithdrawal of the Kawasaki from the MotoGP. The motomondiale loses pieces, strangled by the global economic crisis, costs too high and a short-sighted management. After the false news of the withdrawal of the Honda MotoGP, comes the real demobilization of Kawasaki.

"I can only hope to wake up on January first and discover it was all a nightmare," commented Marco Melandri, Kawasaki's new acquisition in 2009. Instead, unfortunately for Melandri, is the pure reality. "Monday - reveals Alberto Vergani, manager of the Italian driver - I was called by Michael Bartholemy (the team manager of Kawasaki,), which he anticipated that in a few days from Japan announced it was withdrawing."

A letter, which is arrived yesterday morning, all men of the team and the two pilots - Melandri and John Hopkins - received an email in which it explained that due to the economic crisis, the Kawasaki had decided to leave, now, the MotoGP, the maximum expression of motorcycling racing.

SBK. Marco Simoncelli at the start of the first two races

Motorcycle RacingThe SBK will be the future of motoracing?

SBK - Marco Simoncelli ahead of the first two appointments?
While we continue to talk about a possible appearance in the Superbike of Valentino Rossi, Marco Simoncelli for the hypothesis seems much more concrete: the pilot from Coriano (Rimini) Romagna, in fact, could take part in the first two rounds of the 2009 season, scheduled on Phillip Island circuit and Losail, which are already well known by Marco thanks to the Grand Prix motorcycle racing. The World Champion of Class 250, then, as a "guest" , will race in the Team with Max Biaggi and Shinya Nakano.

PROPOSAL - "In Aprilia have asked me if I would participate in the first two races of SBK, for them is a very important commitment," Marco said to the weekly MOTOSPRINT. "We have thought long and I think I will accept. Yes, I own that I will be there, it is an experience that I would really like to do." Unless unexpected or sudden changes, then, the centaur of Coriano will be the exception to the start of 2009 for the SBK. A situation helped by the schedule of Moto GP motorcycle racing, which will start only on April 12 in Qatar, when the Superbike has already completed three of their appointments.

Dakar 2009: Historical new chapter in the world's toughest offroad race

Motorcycle RacingThe Dakar, 5650 km of pure adventure over some of Argentina's and Chile's toughest terrain, will launch the KTM Factory team and many other participants riding the "Made in Austria" machines into 18 days of excitement and fierce competition.

Etienne Lavigne, the Dakar race director has described the event as existing "above all because of a longing for discovery and a capacity to confront the unknown". In the months and weeks leading up to the 18-day race through a major slice of the South American continent, the frisson of excitement has become a rush of adrenalin as the KTM team moves into the final countdown for the major rally event of the season.

The 2009 Dakar: A new era

The last minute cancellation on the eve of the 2008 Dakar left teams and organizers bitterly disappointed. While everyone admitted the cancellation was necessary as security could no longer be guaranteed in some of the countries of Africa, it also meant that a year of dedicated preparation had all been for nothing. Or was it? Now those same participants, including the KTM factory team are facing the inaugural 2009 Dakar in South America with renewed passion and determination.
