Thailand's motorcycle market remained promising last month, although sales fell from the same period last year due to the high base.

Turnover in 2012 was distorted by post-flood demand. Motorcycle sales in May totalled 189,056 units, down by 12% year-on-year. Of the total, 89,876 or 48% were family motorcycles. Automatic-transmission (AT) bikes achieved sales of 85,466 units (45%), sport types sold 8,167 units (4%) and others sold 5,547 units (3%).

By maker, Honda posted the highest sales with 139,869 units for a 74% market share, followed by Yamaha with 36,480 units (19%), Suzuki with 4,765 units (3%), Kawasaki with 4,254 units (2%) and other brands with 3,688 units (2%).

Suchart Arunsaengroj, the director of AP Honda, said sales in May were satisfactory. The new school year was a major driver, boosting sales to 907,154 units in the first five months of the year, a 2% rise from a year earlier.
