I have an 2005 KTM 250EXC that refuses to shift past fourth gear at high revs and under load, unless I get off the throttle and slow down a bit.

I have been told that it may e a worn shifter fork or shifter barrel. Could you shed some light on this? As I will be racing the coming season on this bike, I really want to be able to change gears.

William, I would get the shift forks and shift mechanism checked out for sure. The basic gearbox is the same as the KTM MX bike and they shift well under load. If you want to do some serious off-road racing with a five-year-old KTM 250EXC, a bit of a rebuild would be in order; these items will be easy to inspect with the cases split if your going to freshen up your engine before the race season.Dirt Road
